The Thanet Hotel is a Grade two listed building set in a quiet Georgian Terrace between Russell Square and Bloomsbury Square. We are situated right in the heart of Bloomsbury which is known worldwide for the famous "Bloomsbury Set", A bohemian group of writers such as Virginia Woolf. The Thanet prides itself on the fact that over eighty percent of our guests have been many times before or have been referred by previous guests. This gives the Hotel a wonderful atmosphere with the owners catching up with news from their guests.

The Thanet is a short walk from London's famous theatreland, British Museum, Covent Garden and many other attractions that London has to offer. The hotel is run by the Orchard family who are third generation hoteliers. Richard, Lynwen and their team aim to make the Thanet a welcoming, friendly place to stay. The Thanet is over 200 years old and has an interesting and colourful history. In 1815, the year of the Battle of Waterloo, the building was acquired by William Courtenay and his family.

To attend to his needs he had twelve house staff, a butler, two footman, a housekeeper, three parlourmaids, a cook, an undercook and a 'tweeny', or between stairs maid. Today, the Thanet may not have butlers and footmen but we do have a great team who try their utmost to look after our guests and make their stay an enjoyable one.

The Thanet has three floors up from entrance level. The Thanet does not have a lift. We have tried to mix the old building with new ideas to create an interesting, peaceful atmosphere where guests feel at home. Indeed there is even complimenatry sherry in our cosy lounge. The breakfast at the Thanet has been complimented by many guide books and certainly sets you up for the vigours of sightseeing. The Orchard family hope that you will try the Thanet and enjoy the experience which brings people back time and time again.
